Should college students be given more rights?
Jen B asked:
I get it, “college is a privilege”. Well right now I am not feeling so privileged. We are shelling out 30 to 40 grand to these institutions just so we hopefully might get a decent job in the future. Then we have misc. fees and charges, over priced text books, sub par food, and mediocre housing added on to it all. Unless you are extremely wealthy or have a full scholorship, you are basically in debt up to your ears by the time you graduate. How are we supposed to make monthly payments on our loans if our own college is extracting money from us right out of our own pockets? I cannot count how many text books I bought and never opened all semester. Then the store will give you 2% back of what you paid for it, or worse, nothing at all. I get misc. charges on my bill for damages I did not do. If college is a business, then let’s place some laws in order for the business’s consumers to be treated right. Shouldn’t there be more laws implemented to aid and protect struggling college students?

What are my rights as a consumer when it comes to a contract not fullfilled to my satisfaction?
cbus_heythere asked:
I live in Ohio. We hired a contractor to redo our roof, install vinyl siding, and repair my front porch. It has taken them 9 weeks and they still aren’t finished. This being because they only work about 3 days a week for about 4 hours a day. They are almost finished and the work is hardly worth what we agreed on. They didn’t do everything we agreed on. For example, replacing all of the rotten wood on the roof and porch. Our roof has a hole in it, which we saw when they were replacing our kitchen ceiling from the roof leaking. Do we have to pay the full price? Are there any laws protecting us from paying it all?
We had every intention to pay him for the work. It’s just the work is less-than satisfactory. Our contract states the work, but it is vague. Most of our agreement was oral.

Should there be a law concerning credit related lawsuits?
Eye of Sauron asked:
Now that congress has passed the new bankruptcy laws that do not allow credit obligations to be totally wiped clean, this has given creditors free reign to file lawsuits for bad credit. The amount of lawsuits are jumping high as it is forcing people to file bankruptcy which under the new rules forces them to pay regardless. This use to be bad policy for creditors as it created bad business for consumers.
Do creditors have right to sue consumers with money they have made off of consumers? Should credit be regarded as an investment made by a creditor to a consumer and if that investment goes bad to not cry about it? Are in likewise manner people allowed to sue companies and stock brokers if our investments are lost for one reason or another? So if that cannot be allowed should corporations be allowed to sue consumers for their own bad investments?
Should this be allowed or should congress amend the law to disallow lawsuits for credit obligations?

Will Congress and Senate ever agree on a more consumer choice oriented Cable/Satellite tv law?
Pettyfan asked:
They debated about forcing Cable and Satellite companies to give consumers choice about the channels they wanted instead of Consumers being forced by cable and satellite companies to pay for channels they never watch. Do you think this will be a pipe dream forever or will the government step in to give consumers more rights?
The local cable company has a nice basic cable package with about 25 channels but half of them I wouldn’t even watch so I still get my TV over the air. I don’t see the point in paying for channels I won’t watch.

Consumer Rights with Credit Cards?
SSMChicago asked:
I recently fell into financial hardship and called my credit card company BEFORE I was late in making a payment with the possibility of being set-up with a hardship program of some sort or a freeze on my account, or payment plan until I can then again begin to make payments. The account representative/supervisor was less than helpful and said, “We can’t help you until you’re late on your account.” I was shocked and reiterated to her if what she had just told me is correct. Now, I have been delinquent on this account for roughly 3 months going on 4. Originally the balance was $5000, now with all the interest and late fees it is $6000. As a consumer, I feel the information the Account Representative provided me with is not only wrong but usury. How can the bank advise you to be late, AND also have the right to inflate your interest rates and tackle on the late fees? Can someone give me guidance as to credit laws and my rights. I am at the point of settlement but would rather not

[UK] Xbox 360: what rights do I have in law?
A2thT asked:
[UK only] The Sale of Goods Act does not apply between myself, the consumer and Microsoft, since I didn’t buy the console from them. I believe I’m right in thinking that the SoGs Act only applies between a seller and a buyer?
So, what are my rights as against the manufacturer, i.e. Microsoft. Are there any other statutory provisions, or is the issue just left to the general law of negligence?
If no one can answer the law questions, do you know what I can do if Microsoft fail to repair the console when it is still in warranty? What remedy do I have?
Thanks

Is it illegal to show a consumer their vehicles fluids?
j.balde@att.net asked:
I told my crew at my shop that it is a state law, which makes it illegal to show the consumer the fluid color on their car. They said that that was false and that it was okay. Who was right?
the state is wisconsin. Cause I go off of mileage of the vehicle… ie. gm trucks are recommend to be flushed out (for transmissions) once every 50 000 to 60 000 miles. Sometimes the tranny fluid does show up dark around that milage.
