Does anyone know what rights a consumer has in regards to the purcahse of an used car?
CDoubleP asked:
I bought an used car (6mths ago) and have had numerous problems (ERG, gas tank, suspension) with it. There was no warranty and I was aware that it was in an accident. Am I just out of luck or is the dealership liable, in part? The state I am in does not apply the Lemon Law to used cars.

lemon law does not apply to used cars? what good is it then? what state are you in?
If you signed an “as is” contract, you do not have any recourse. You might want to contact the seller, though, let them know the situation and see if they are willing to assume some of the cost on a goodwill basis.
Usually there is a grace period…and usually the cars are sold “AS IS”..and you have a written contract on it…IF you buy warranty go over the warranty with the dealership and ask if what your expiriencing is covered under warranty. Call your dealer and tell them the problems ur having then ask if there is something they can help you with.
A lemon law would not cover what you mentioned anyway, unless you brought the vehicle back several times to the dealer for the same problem. I’m going to guess you didn’t buy an extended warranty? Probably because you didn’t think you need it. I’ve dealt with this problem hundreds of times. I always recommend purchasing extended warranties when purchasing a used car. Unfortunately i do believe you are out of luck…..Sorry.
If there is no warranty then you have no options. You can try to negotiate another vehicle purchase but that’s just about it. Next time you buy a used car have a certified mechanic check out the vehicle - they’ll know if it was in an accident or what future repairs it will need.
