Should college students be given more rights?

I get it, “college is a privilege”. Well right now I am not feeling so privileged. We are shelling out 30 to 40 grand to these institutions just so we hopefully might get a decent job in the future. Then we have misc. fees and charges, over priced text books, sub par food, and mediocre housing added on to it all. Unless you are extremely wealthy or have a full scholorship, you are basically in debt up to your ears by the time you graduate. How are we supposed to make monthly payments on our loans if our own college is extracting money from us right out of our own pockets? I cannot count how many text books I bought and never opened all semester. Then the store will give you 2% back of what you paid for it, or worse, nothing at all. I get misc. charges on my bill for damages I did not do. If college is a business, then let’s place some laws in order for the business’s consumers to be treated right. Shouldn’t there be more laws implemented to aid and protect struggling college students?

    I agree. However, if you attend a private college, you’re just begging for it. If the charges you refer to, bother you, you can’t afford to be there anyway. Now, in state schools, you have the right to scream your head off and organize protests and do any non-violent acts to show your displeasure.

    Why should a college student be given more “rights” than anyone else? You chose to go to college. No one is making you go. (except maybe your parents) And then what do you do when you graduate or drop-out and those “rights” are revoked?

    You are already priviledged to be able to attend college at all. And in the “real world” there isn’t anyone to make and serve you food whenever you want it…sub-par or not. You aren’t guaranteed that you can even get “mediocre housing.” Misc. fees, charges, and over-priced merchandise are facts of life. The one thing you can count on every college student learning is that nothing is free.

    And don’t forget the millions of people who are in debt up to their ears, don’t have a college degree and struggle every day to find a way to feed and clothe their families. Count your blessings, earn your degree, get a job, pay your bills, and stop confusing rights with priviledges.

    Try selling your textbooks back yourself on half.com or Amazon or similar website. You’ll make a better profit. If you’re being charged for damages you didn’t cause, you can dispute that.

    There are many colleges; if you don’t like the one you’re at, perhaps you should look into attending college somewhere else.

    When you graduate, you can consolidate your loans. The Dept. of Education even has an income-based payment plan to help those of us who end up working at colleges for tiny salaries!

    The complaints you’re voicing are very common. Why not try organizing a student group? You might at least be able to change things like fees, food, and housing. But, think carefully about whether changing the rest would actually be a good thing for all concerned. If you still do think that it would, then you can take steps up to and including a class action suit and approaching a legislator.
