Should college students be given more rights?

Jen B asked:

I get it, “college is a privilege”. Well right now I am not feeling so privileged. We are shelling out 30 to 40 grand to these institutions just so we hopefully might get a decent job in the future. Then we have misc. fees and charges, over priced text books, sub par food, and mediocre housing added on to it all. Unless you are extremely wealthy or have a full scholorship, you are basically in debt up to your ears by the time you graduate. How are we supposed to make monthly payments on our loans if our own college is extracting money from us right out of our own pockets? I cannot count how many text books I bought and never opened all semester. Then the store will give you 2% back of what you paid for it, or worse, nothing at all. I get misc. charges on my bill for damages I did not do. If college is a business, then let’s place some laws in order for the business’s consumers to be treated right. Shouldn’t there be more laws implemented to aid and protect struggling college students?

What are my rights as a consumer when it comes to a contract not fullfilled to my satisfaction?

cbus_heythere asked:

I live in Ohio. We hired a contractor to redo our roof, install vinyl siding, and repair my front porch. It has taken them 9 weeks and they still aren’t finished. This being because they only work about 3 days a week for about 4 hours a day. They are almost finished and the work is hardly worth what we agreed on. They didn’t do everything we agreed on. For example, replacing all of the rotten wood on the roof and porch. Our roof has a hole in it, which we saw when they were replacing our kitchen ceiling from the roof leaking. Do we have to pay the full price? Are there any laws protecting us from paying it all?
We had every intention to pay him for the work. It’s just the work is less-than satisfactory. Our contract states the work, but it is vague. Most of our agreement was oral.

Does anyone know what rights a consumer has in regards to the purcahse of an used car?

CDoubleP asked:

I bought an used car (6mths ago) and have had numerous problems (ERG, gas tank, suspension) with it. There was no warranty and I was aware that it was in an accident. Am I just out of luck or is the dealership liable, in part? The state I am in does not apply the Lemon Law to used cars.

After the recovery does congress need to change consumer protection laws?

beren asked:

I think it may hurt things right now, but I would like to see two drastic changes to protect consumers.

1. I would like to make it illegal for companies to sell your personal information unless you specifically allow them to. If you ever read privacy statements almost of them say they will sell your info whenever the hell they want even if they say the care about your privacy. My proposal is that you have to specifically agree to allow them to sell your information and it cannot be a condition for services that the company normally gives to its customers. It must be a separate agreement.

2. The second thing I would like to see is that instead of the burden of proof that you made a purchase or got credit is on you, that the burden of proof is on those that are issuing the credit. Right now, the laws protect the credit issuer and those that steal identities. It is up to the consumer to prove that they are not the ones making the purchase. If it were up to the credit issuers, they would put systems in place to make sure that identities cannot be stolen. Let the market fix the problem. Credit issuers would not be as willing to give credit but ultimately it would help us in the long run, since issuing too much credit is part of our current problems.

“No 14 day Return or Exchange” (No Consumer rights?) at Major UK Mobile Phone Retailer?

Martin B asked:

I took an 18 month contract with (UK Retailer) with Orange with a Samsung G800. On my contract, written in biro, was “No 14 day Refund/Exchange”. I then after 2 hours found that the phone was not fit for purpose. There are fundamental flaws with the camera/firmware, such as the flash not operating properly resulting in any indoor photo in poor light being dark.
I went back to retailer.
I explained that this phone model was unsuitable, as described as being “The Photographers Choice”, was surely contravening Trading Standards. What’s more, The Consumer Rights law dictates “The law says that the goods must be of satisfactory quality. This means that the goods should be free of any faults, including minor ones”.
Remember the contract biro part?
This law is also says “There are a number of things a trader is not allowed to do when they sell you goods. These include make a written statement that you have no legal rights when you buy goods”
What should I do here? Are they breaking the law?
Sorry, title and question have different terms. I don’t have the contract to hand but think the following was written: “No 14 day Refund/Exchange”. Basically, and in English, No cooling off period and no consumer statutory rights?

Why isn’t it required by law to state whether companies test on animals?

愛 asked:

I’m just pondering why? Doesn’t the consumer have the right to know?

Also, I’m sure the companies and franchises will not collapse, because if they are worried about that then they would use alternative methods of testing. Animal testing is completely unnecessary and inaccurate.

Thanks! :]

Two weeks ago or so I went to a store and applied for credit , at the store that day I charged approx. $2000.

dan asked:

I THAN RETURNED TO GET TWO COMPUTERS FOR EACH OF MY KIDS , THE SAME SALESMAN WAITED ON ME AND TOLD ME MY CREDIT LIMIT WAS PLENTY HIGH ENOUGH ,SO I CHARGED THEM AND LEFT .
THE COMPUTERS ENDED UP 2 1/2 HOURS AWAY WITH MY KIDS AT THIER MOTHERS HOUSE . FINALLY I WENT TO THE STORE TO PICK UP A T.V. AND FINALLY THE CREDIT LIMIT WAS DONE SO THE SALESMAN CALLED FOR A CREDIT INCREASE AND THAN TOLD ME THERE IS A BIG SCREW UP .
UPON THE FIRST CHARGE HE CHARGED SOMEONE ELSES ACCOUNT , AND MY CREDIT NEVER WHEN THREW IT WAS DECLINED .
SO HE TOLD ME TO RETURN ALL OF THE THINGS OR IT WOULD BE FRAUD .
I DONT HAVE ALL THE THINGS SOME OF THEM ARE INSTALLED - LIKE A DISHWASHER THAT I PAID A BUILDER TO INSTALL , COMPUTERS THAT ARE WITH MY KIDS THAT I REALLY DONT WANT TO GET FROM THEM, AND CAN’T TIL I SEE THEM AGAIN IN THE SUMMER .
WHAT SHOULD I DO ? ISN’T THERE A CONSUMERS RIGHT LAW TO PROTECT ME ?
